  1. The base layer consists of aluminum foil to bulk out the main shape of the head, then covered it with a layer of Sculpey. I do this to ensure I remain under a certain thickness of clay so that it bakes properly, and not wasting unnecessary amounts.

  2. Once I’m happy with the shape, size and symmetry I placed resin eyes on either side, but decided to remove them to create eye sockets and sculpt removable eyes instead.

  3. Now comes each section of adding different parts of the skeletal structure, carving in the intricate designs and adding on the twisted horns. All while trying to maintain some symmetry but leaning towards asymmetry to add more character and realism.

  4. The dragon was baked section by section in order to preserve already completed areas. This included sculpting the horns and orbs separately and attaching them later. All evident in the process pictures below.

  5. Once completed it is smoothed with isopropyl alcohol using a paintbrush. This also takes away any finger-prints and oils. After receiving a final bake, it is sanded which includes ensuring the bottom is level.

  6. I then create a silicon mold to replicate the sculpture so I can make multiple resin casts with wide variations of colours and vibrations, all carrying its own unique personality and purpose.
